The Horse Trust opened its gates to Joey and his three colleagues in 2014, when the era of The Cleveland Police Mounted Section came to an end. The four traveled the length of the country to arrive safely at our Home of Rest, after being assessed as no longer suitable for operational police work for varying reasons. Their former team were warmed by the knowledge that the horses would join their old colleague and former beloved Horse Trust resident; Big Klyde.

Joey was the youngest upon arrival at eight years old, standing at a whopping 16.3hh high. In his younger years he was a gorgeous dapple grey gelding with the cutest Joey-trademark brown fluffy ears! Now older, he could be described as more of the refined type; a dashing grey gentleman.

Joey is a well-loved member of our Horse Trust herd and is certainly a firm favourite with everyone here. He regularly comes in to meet visitors and absolutely loves the attention! It’s safe to say Joey is a head-turner, and it’s no surprise – he is certainly very handsome!

As an era drew to a close for Cleveland in 2014, the Police Officers, grooms and volunteers who worked with these horses came down with them to say goodbye. There were many emotional farewells and promises to visit from the whole Cleveland team, who we always enjoy welcoming when they can take the journey down to the Chiltern hills in Buckinghamshire. The Horse Trust is honoured to be able to help by providing a sanctuary to big, beautiful and brave horses like Joey and his friends.
