Welcome Storm

We are thrilled to introduce you to our newest arrival through our stable doors, the incredibly handsome Storm. Storm joins us from The Royal Mews where he served a magnificent 15 years, pulling Her Majesty The Queen’s carriage.

Storm is somewhat of a celebrity and has a shared history with our loveable resident, Daniel. Storm and Daniel worked together on many occasions including pulling Her Majesty’s carriage on the day of her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. We are honoured to welcome Storm and we’re excited to get to know him more as he settles into his new life of retirement in the beautiful Chiltern hills, alongside former colleague Daniel.

Storm, along with fellow Windsor Grey, Daniel, were so popular with Her Majesty that a life-sized statue of the pair of them was commissioned in 2013 and unveiled in Windsor to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. The giant artwork was created by sculptor Robert Rattray and can be seen today on The Long Walk. It’s a wonderful way to recognise these two magnificent horses who now reside with us at The Horse Trust.

New resident Storm also knows our lovely Claudia as they were stable mates whilst at the Royal Mews together. It’s lovely that Storm has so many connections to our current residents and we can’t wait to see them all together.

Storm, an Irish Draught, now 20 years old, performed many duties as a State Ceremonial Carriage horse including pulling the carriages in which Her Majesty and other members of the Royal Family travelled. This meant Storm was at the front of many important events during his career including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, many State Visits, State Opening’s as well as Royal Ascot, to name just a few.

Storm retires to us due to an irregular heart meaning he is no longer fit to work at the level required to perform his duties. All Royal Mews horses are in fact owned by the public rather than The Queen which is why they retire to us. He has been described as ‘bomb proof’, perhaps the ultimate compliment to any serving horse, meaning he wasn’t afraid of anything and was incredibly reliable. He has also been described as ‘strong’ but ‘very soft and kind in nature’ and we’re sure he will prove just as popular with our team and supporters as he was with Her Majesty!
