Welcoming Frankie, George, and Longbow to The Horse Trust
We’re overjoyed to welcome three new arrivals into our herd at the Home of Rest for Horses in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire.
We’re overjoyed to welcome three new arrivals into our herd at the Home of Rest for Horses in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire. Frankie, George, and Longbow, each having served their country in distinguished careers with Gloucester Mounted Police, Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled Association, and The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, and have now found a peaceful retirement home with us. These two geldings and one mare are already enjoying their new grazing spots and equine friends. Here’s a closer look at their incredible journeys and the new chapter of their lives.
Frankie: Former Gloucestershire Police Horse
Highnam, affectionately known as Frankie, is a stunning black Irish Sports Horse. Retiring to us in July 2024 after a distinguished four-year career with the Gloucester Mounted Police, Frankie’s towering 17.2hh stature made him an effective and striking police horse.
During his remarkable career, Frankie achieved an impressive array of accomplishments. He was deployed to COP26 in Glasgow for public order patrols, assisted at high-profile events such as Manchester City vs. Manchester United, and participated in ceremonial events including parade escorts and funerals. Most notably, Frankie made history as the first horse for Gloucestershire Constabulary to lead the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner during his first year of duty, showcasing his calm and gentle personality.
Unfortunately, Frankie’s career was cut short due to kissing spine and arthritis. Now, in the serene Chiltern Hills, he enjoys the rest and relaxation he so richly deserves.

George: A Beloved Member of Cranleigh RDA
George, a former service horse of Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), is known for his placid and kind nature. His gentle demeanour made him a favourite among riders for his reliability and patience. George’s career saw him participate in major events such as RDA dressage at Hickstead and the annual RDA sponsored ride for eight consecutive years.
Despite his stellar service, it became clear that George was no longer enjoying his work at the RDA. Thorough checks confirmed it was time for his well-deserved retirement. A spokesperson from Cranleigh RDA remarked, “He has always been a rock, never complaining or displaying a cross word, making him adored by all our riders.”
George has adjusted well to his new life at The Horse Trust, initially spending a week in isolation to acclimatize. Now, he happily lives with his new field buddies, enjoying a retirement full of love and care.

Longbow: A Majestic and Independent Spirit
Longbow, a beautiful black mare, retired to our Home of Rest for Horses after an impressive career. Known for her free spirit, Longbow is happiest in the pastures with her friends, especially her closest companion, Kimberly, another ex-Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) horse.
Throughout her service, Longbow mainly participated in The Queen’s, now The King’s Life Guard. Her energetic spirit was a welcome challenge for HCMR’s more experienced riders, and her talent for show jumping shone during military show jumping competitions. However, due to age-related medical concerns, and with her temperament in mind, it was decided to retire her from ridden work.
Now, Longbow can enjoy the peaceful and fulfilling life she is suited to, surrounded by her equine friends and the serene countryside she loves so much.
