We’re thrilled to welcome three magnificent new residents to our Sponsorship scheme – Meg, Max…

Rest In Peace, Shamrock
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to another of our beloved residents. Shamrock spent eight wonderful years in our care, touching the hearts of countless people during that time. We bid a very fond farewell to Shamrock at the truly remarkable age of 32.
Shamrock was a horse full of love, known for his playful and mischievous nature in his younger years. As he aged, he mellowed into a steadfast and reliable presence in the herd. He was a true stalwart, someone you could always count on. Over the years, he formed close bonds with many of our residents, past and present, but it is his most recent companion, fellow senior Aquaba, who will miss him dearly.
In June 2017, Shamrock retired to The Horse Trust after an illustrious career serving with the Defence Animal Centre as a ‘Rider,’ where he helped train members of The Household Cavalry and The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery to become Riding Instructors. He also served with The Household Division as a Charger, ridden by Foot Guard Officers on ceremonial occasions such as State Visits and Trooping the Colour.
Shamrock quickly settled into life here at The Horse Trust, bringing joy and laughter to our Care Team with his tricks and antics. It has been an incredible honour to give this beautiful horse the peaceful retirement he truly deserved, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire.
Our head groom, Tracy, fondly remembers Shamrock as a ‘very sweet boy,’ sharing a particular memory:
I’ll always remember when he and Tarnish (another resident) would push out of the gate and charge around the next field, refusing to be caught! They were a mischievous pair!
Shamrock passed away peacefully following a short but serious bout of colic. He left us quietly, surrounded by the same love and compassion he showed throughout his life. His gentle spirit, sense of fun, and quiet wisdom will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
We are so grateful to have shared eight wonderful years with Shamrock, and he will forever hold a special place in our hearts and memories.
Run free, Shamrock. HTx
The Horse Trust relies on public support to continue to provide a forever home to retired military, police, Royal Mews and working horses.
