Maryland Retired
Maryland, affectionately known as Mary, is a retired Royal Mews ‘Cleveland Bay’ horse. During her 15-year career, Maryland was tasked with picking up high commissioners and ambassadors presenting their credentials to the monarch.
The reigning monarch names every horse at the Royal Mews. Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II reportedly particularly enjoyed this, and often chose places she had visited, hence Maryland’s name!
As a State ceremonial carriage horse, Maryland participated in many significant events, including State visits, State Openings of Parliament, and Trooping the Colour. She often pulled the carriage alongside former Horse Trust resident, Sydney.
In retirement, Maryland is fondly described by our Equine Care Team as gentle yet bold and self-assured. She knows who she is and what she likes, embodying a strong, independent spirit. Playful and young at heart, Maryland likes to play with enrichment toys when on the yard and absolutely loves exchanging neck scratches with her fellow herd mates out in the field.
Maryland is an incredibly sweet mare with a gentle nature, and we couldn’t be happier to bring you closer to this wonderful, accomplished mare through our sponsorship scheme.
