Atlas Retired
Formally known as Peter the Great, towering bay 18.2hh Shire horse, Atlas, lives up to his name and is of one of our largest retirees! Due to his striking presence and bold yet loveable and incredibly sweet personality, Atlas acquired quite the celebrity status during his six and a half year career with Thames Valley Police (TVP).
During his career, Atlas took part in some of the UK’s most high-profile events such as leading the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral procession alongside beloved former Horse Trust resident, Aurora. He also attended the coronation of King Charles III and the royal wedding of Harry and Meghan. Beyond this, Atlas also served tirelessly at football matches, protests, and joint operations with other police forces. Atlas’s final duty was no less significant, marking the end of his career at Ascot by escorting members of the Royal Family to the Royal Box, bringing his chapter with the force to a fitting close.
Upon retirement, Chris, Atlas’s former rider at TVP, said:
Atlas is a true gentle giant. He’s best friends with fellow TVP horse Odin. He’s got a love for bananas, chin scratches, and his massage pad—he’s the best boy.
Known for his playful and curious nature, Atlas always succeeded in keeping his colleagues entertained. Despite his size, Atlas’s labrador-like affection continues to endear him to everyone he meets.
Atlas’s retirement comes as a result of arthritis and recurring lameness, prompting the decision to let him enjoy a well-deserved slower pace of life. He will now share his new home with former colleagues, including Trojan, as well as Rubin and Samson, who he often crossed paths with during his career.
