Hay There, Natalie!

For this month’s edition of Hay There, we had a chat with Natalie, one of our wonderful and dedicated Senior Grooms. Natalie is an animal lover with a particular soft spot for dogs – and, of course, horses. Her career path has been fascinating, leading her to the role she holds today, and the way she pours her heart into her work inspires us all.

Read on to learn more about Natalie!

How long have you been at The Horse Trust and what is your role?

I’ve been here for three and a half years, and I’m currently a Senior Groom.

What brought you here (previous career, experience with horses, etc.)?

I previously worked at Blue Cross with cats, dogs, and small animals such as rabbits. I’ve been around horses since I was six months old, as my family has always owned them.

You have experience as a dog trainer, so we hear… Are there many differences or similarities between training the two?

I did some dog training in my previous job, and yes, training horses and dogs is very similar! The main difference is the level of commitment, and the type of rewards used.

Can you teach an old dog – or horse – new tricks?

Absolutely! I taught my old dog, whom I rehomed from my previous job, how to sit at the age of 10. I believe animals can learn at any age – you just need to find what motivates them.

What sparked your love of horses? Do you have a particular favourite at The Horse Trust, and why?

I’ve loved horses from a very young age. My favourite at The Horse Trust is Elizabeth (although I love them all) because she is so gentle, kind, and loving… and, of course, beautiful.

We remember you mentioning you have some horses of your own. How do you balance their needs with the needs of the horses here?

My days start very early at 5 a.m. with my dogs, so I can care for my horses before coming to work for 7:30 a.m. Then I take care of them again in the evening. It’s a lifestyle choice, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

What do you love most about your role?

I really enjoy caring for the horses and treating those who are sick or injured. Knowing I’m helping them recover is rewarding.

What does a day in the life of Natalie at The Horse Trust look like?

We start the day with a morning briefing to discuss any updates, issues, or specific tasks for the day. Then, we split into small teams to check on the horses. The morning involves mucking out, weighing, treatments, grooming, and bringing horses in for visitors. In the afternoon, we check on the horses again, tend to any in the barns, and ensure they are comfortable for the night.

Is there a memory that stands out for you at The Horse Trust? It could be something funny, special, or heartwarming.

Last winter, when Elizabeth was inside one morning, she was lying down, and she stayed there when I gave her a hug.

What would you say to anyone considering a career working with horses?

If you love horses and don’t mind working hard outdoors in all weather conditions, go for it!

What is your favourite thing about working at The Horse Trust?

Caring for all the lovely horses, whether they have served their communities or come from difficult backgrounds.
