Hay There, Lotte!

This month we spoke with our wonderful Senior Groom, Lotte. At just 20 years old, Lotte has already made a big impact at The Horse Trust. From joining as a groom in 2021 to being promoted to Senior Groom at just 18, her passion for horses shines through every day.

How long have you been at The Horse Trust?

I’ve been here since November 2021! I started as a groom and was promoted to Senior Groom in April 2023 when I was 18.

What led you to a career with horses?

I’ve always had a passion for horses – I started riding when I was seven! Before coming here, I worked at two other yards and studied equine studies at college.

What does a typical day look like for you?

No two days are ever the same, but my usual routine goes like this:

☀️ Early morning – Feed my own three horses before heading to work.
🏇 7:30 AM – Arrive at The Horse Trust, mix up feeds and medications, and check on the horses.
💙 Care & treatment – Make sure all the horses are happy and healthy, carrying out any necessary treatments.
🏡 Mucking out & feeding – Keeping their stables clean and comfy.
🔄 Evening checks – One last check-in before heading home.

Some days are a bit more hectic, especially when we’re organising vet visits or farrier days, but that’s what keeps the job exciting!

Do you have a favourite horse at The Horse Trust?

It’s impossible to pick just one! But if I had to choose, my top three are:

🐴 Scarborough (Scabby) – The sweetest little horse! He’s so easy to teach, and he even fist bumps and gives kisses.
🐴 Atticus (Ant) – A gentle giant with such a kind nature.
🐴 Sheffield (Sheffy) – He’s basically a big Labrador, always coming over for cuddles!

You have three horses of your own, how do you manage that alongside work?

I’m lucky that they’re close to home, so I can look after them before and after work. One is a project horse, one is retired, and one is my absolute pride and joy!

Is there a memory that stands out to you?

Caring for the cavalry horses after the London incident, especially Vida. He holds a really special place in my heart. It was amazing to be part of his recovery and so rewarding to hear how much his respite with us helped. I was sad to see him go, but I’m glad he’s doing much better!

What do you love most about your role?

I really enjoy teaching new people how we do things here. Also, I love running farrier days and bathing ponies in the summer. Those are definitely highlights!

What’s your favourite thing about The Horse Trust?

Seeing these horses enjoy their retirement and giving rescue cases a safe, loving home. Also, the team here is amazing. You make so many great friends!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about working with horses?

It’s a hard job, but it’s so rewarding. Seeing the horses grow and knowing you’re making a difference makes it all worth it.

Lotte’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Her colleague, Shanie, sums it up perfectly:

Lotte is patient, kind, and hilarious – we have some brilliant laughs when we work together. Her love for horses comes naturally, and she’s brilliant at what she does.

Thank you for everything you do, Lotte!
