Goodnight, Rocco

With a heavy heart, we bring the news of another loss from our wonderful herd. Rocco, formerly of the Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company has crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of 26.

Rocco was a gorgeous 17.2hh KWPN (Royal Dutch Warmblood Studbook of the Netherlands) Dark Bay Gelding who was on loan to the Light Cavalry for 2 years. He was retired to The Horse Trust for a more relaxed pace of life and a well-deserved rest in May of 2015.

Rocco took part in many parades during his career and due to his patient nature taught many beginners to ride in the school and jumped at the opportunity to go for a leisurely hack when time allowed. He took part in the BLESMA Parade, British Military Tournament, Blenheim Musical Ride, Lord Mayor’s Show and Royal Windsor Horse Show. Prior to his career with the Light Cavalry Rocco was a showjumper and jet setter, often competing abroad!

After this impressive and varied career, Rocco’s ongoing lameness issues meant it was time for him to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Rocco was described as “a very sweet horse and who was easy and quiet to handle on the ground.” We have been honoured to care for him whilst he lived out the rest of his days on our beautiful rolling Chiltern Hills.

Rocco spent his days surrounded by kindness, care, and love. Easily spotted in the field with his iconic ears, he will be sorely missed by the robin to his batman and constant companion, Burnaby. Rocco and Burnaby were inseparable, often seen grazing side by side or sharing a quiet moment in the sun. Their bond was a testament to Rocco’s gentle and social nature. Rocco was a spirited member of the herd and a pleasure to care for, getting up to mischief and keeping our grooms busy hunting for lost shoes and everyone entertained with his antics.

Sadly, Rocco suffered an acute bout of colic, which was closely monitored and managed by our dedicated veterinary team. Despite their best efforts and stellar care, his condition progressed rapidly, and Rocco stopped responding to treatment and pain relief. To spare Rocco from any further pain or discomfort, the difficult but kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully. May he now forever run pain-free, surrounded by the peace and joy he so deserves. Rest in peace, Rocco. HTx
