Today, we come together to remember and celebrate the life of Jack, or as he…
Goodnight, Alf
It is with immense sadness that we bring you the news of the passing of Alf, a beloved, long-time member of our Horse Trust family. Alf came to The Horse Trust in 2014 following the closure of the Cleveland Police Mounted Section, arriving alongside fellow police horses Joey, Reg and Roman. From the moment he arrived, Alf showed his lovable character, his gentle soul, mischievous nature, and big, heartwarming presence.
During his distinguished career with the Cleveland Mounted Section, Alf helped police the 2012 Olympic Games in London, temporarily stationed at the Olympic Park. He also worked tirelessly at countless football matches, particularly at Middlesbrough F.C., ensuring the safety of fans. Despite his grand stature, standing at an impressive 17.1hh, Alf was the epitome of a gentle giant. His calm and kind demeanour made him a favourite among both his equine companions and human admirers. Alf delighted visitors at our open days, always ready to greet them with his soft, friendly eyes and curious nuzzles.
Alf shared a particularly special bond with his best friend and constant companion, TVP horse Samson. The two were inseparable, their friendship bringing joy and laughter to everyone who witnessed it. Whether grazing side by side in the fields or engaging in their signature antics, like dismantling a water trough and flooding the barn not once but twice, their playful mischief was a testament to their shared zest for life. We take comfort in the thought that they are now reunited, galloping together once more.
Alf had a very close call a few years back getting through colic surgery and some post operative challenges, but he came through with flying colours in the end. Alf also faced a long battle with navicular disease, a condition that caused ongoing lameness issues. Our dedicated veterinary team worked tirelessly to manage his condition and ensure his comfort, but in recent weeks, it became clear that his pain was increasing. Despite every effort to support him, we could no longer keep Alf happy and comfortable and on what was to be his last day with us he also began to colic. With heavy hearts, the kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully and join Samson once again.
We have been truly honoured to give this remarkable horse the retirement he so deserved, surrounded by the beauty and tranquillity of the rolling Chiltern Hills. Alf spent his final years in the company of those who loved him, receiving all the care, kindness, and affection he could ever need.
Rest easy now, Alf, and may you forever run free with Samson, your dear friend. You will always be remembered for your gentle spirit, your playful heart, and the love you gave to everyone who had the privilege of knowing you. HTx
