Atticus Retires at Burghley After 14 Years of Service with The Household Division

Atticus, a striking 17.2hh bay Irish Sports Horse with a gentle yet bold personality, received a ceremonial retirement from The Household Division in the Main Arena at Burghley Horse Trials on Sunday 8th September. This marked the end of an extraordinary 14-year career, during which he served as an Officer’s Charger. Now aged 18, Atticus is set to enjoy a well-earned retirement at our Home of Rest for Horses in the beautiful Chilterns.

As the trusted mount of senior officers, Atticus became an integral part of The Household Division, excelling in parades, state ceremonies, and public duties. His calm and quiet temperament, along with his dignified presence, made him a standout at some of the UK’s most significant royal and military events.

Reflecting on Atticus’s remarkable service, a spokesperson from The Household Division, said:

Atticus spent his career as an Officer’s Charger at the Household Division Stables. He was ridden by Foot Guards officers in many key positions on parade. His quiet temperament made him perfectly suited for the role, and his striking appearance made him stand out!

Towards the end of his career, Atticus was suffering with recurring lameness, which meant that he had to be rested for six months. Though carefully reintroduced to work, it became clear that his condition persisted, signalling it was time for him to transition into a well-deserved, slower pace of life. Now, he embarks on a new chapter, settling into a peaceful retirement amidst the tranquil pastures of the Chilterns.

Ceremonial Retirement at Burghley Horse Trials

Atticus’s official retirement was celebrated in an emotional ceremony at the Burghley Horse Trials on Sunday, September 8th. This world-renowned 5* Three-Day Event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors over four days, provided the perfect setting to honour Atticus’s long and noble career.

At midday, just before the excitement of the Shetland Pony Grand National, Atticus took his final steps as a member of The Household Division in the Main Arena. Before a moved and tearful crowd, his saddle was removed for the last time, and he was wrapped in the comfort of his new Horse Trust rug, symbolising the end of his distinguished career and the beginning of a peaceful and fulfilling retirement among friends, both old and new, in the serene fields of Buckinghamshire.

The touching moment was met with tears and applause, a fitting tribute to Atticus’s loyal service and his lasting impact on The Household Division.

A New Beginning at The Horse Trust

The Horse Trust, a charity dedicated to the care of retired working horses, is honoured to welcome Atticus to their tranquil pastures in the Chiltern Hills. Here, he will spend his twilight years surrounded by lush green fields, receiving the care and rest he has so rightfully earned after his many years of outstanding service.
