Rest In Peace, Jack

Today, we come together to remember and celebrate the life of Jack, or as he was lovingly nicknamed, JJ, who has sadly passed away at the age of 29. Jack brought so much joy to everyone he met during his amazing career with Waverley Driving Group Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), and later, in his well-earned retirement here at The Horse Trust.

A beautiful black gelding standing at 14.3 hands high, Jack spent 11 wonderful years as a carriage-driving pony, and he was loved dearly by all who knew him. His kind and gentle nature made him a steady companion, and he brought happiness to so many people along the way. Whether he was carrying riders or simply being his calm self, Jack always kept those around him safe and happy.

When Jack retired to The Horse Trust in June 2021, he came alongside his long-time friend Blue, and together they got to enjoy the quieter, peaceful life they both truly deserved. In retirement, Jack was a shining example of grace and resilience. Even after losing an eye, he was still the same sweet soul.

As Horse Trust Groom Joe shared:

He loved trying to scratch his head on you but always respected your limits. To me, he just seemed kind – there’s not a bad word to say about him.

Jack remained as calm and kind as ever, whether he was out in the field or being led by Joe in the HHH parade last year, showing what a gentle pony he was.

Horse Trust Training Coordinator, Zara, fondly recalls special memories she shared with Jack, who often ran up to greet her in the field with the promise of mints. His days at The Horse Trust were filled with comfort, care, and the love of all those around him.

Jack had been struggling with arthritis for a long time, and sadly, his condition deteriorated in the weeks prior to the point where we could no longer keep him comfortable. In the end, the kindest decision was to let him go peacefully.

Today, we honour Jack’s memory, a pony who brought so much love and joy throughout his life. Though he may be gone, the legacy of his gentle spirit will remain with us forever. Rest easy now, sweet Jack, and know that your kindness, patience, and warmth will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you. May you run free and happy across endless fields, reunited with old friends, knowing just how much you were cherished. HTx
