Max is a beautiful Shire X who served with South Wales Police (SWP) for a magnificent 15 years! Standing at 16.2hh, Max’s striking presence and unique markings made him truly stand out. His sociable and endearing nature quickly captured the hearts of his teammates, earning him the affectionate nicknames “Maxy” and “Maximus.”
Throughout his long and noble career, Max carried out a wide range of duties. From everyday patrols across South Wales—through both small communities and bustling cities—his work spanned High Visibility Patrols, searching for missing persons across varied terrain, school visits, community events, public disorder and protests, as well as ceremonial duties such as royal visits and major sporting events like football and rugby matches. Max also supported other forces at their events, including the royal wedding and Ascot!
Max’s most notable moments include patrolling at the royal wedding of Harry and Meghan, marching in procession behind the Household Cavalry for the late Queen Elizabeth III’s birthday, standing firm during the Ely Riots of 2023, and performing ceremonial duties for King Charles III at Cardiff Castle.
According to his former teammates, Max was brave enough to stand strong in front of the most hostile crowds, yet gentle and patient when meeting small children and families. He is truly a gentle giant and a hero in every sense of the word.
Max’s claim to fame was his role in the TV show Casualty, where he played a police horse whose rider had fallen off during a football match. In the scene, Max walked back to A&E in search of his rider. He reportedly performed wonderfully through several hours of filming, displaying patience and entertaining his fellow cast members throughout the day.
Overall, Max is described as incredibly sociable, with impeccable stable manners. He loves fuss and attention, relishing a good groom, and will even nudge you for a scratch! Laid back and content both in his own company and with other horses, Max’s kind and easy-going nature makes him an absolute joy to be around.
Now retiring due to age-related wear and tear after an outstanding career with SWP, we are overjoyed to welcome Max into our herd. Here, he can reconnect with old friends and make new ones along the way under our loving care.
