Strangles Awareness Week 2024: What is Strangles?
Strangles is a serious equine disease, endemic in the UK horse population. With our interests in equine health and wellbeing, it won’t be a surprise to hear we are proud collaborators of Strangles Awareness Week (SAW) taking place 6th–12th May 2024.
The focus for SAW this year is empowering horse owners to take proactive measures in disease prevention – a message we fully support! The health costs to horses and emotional costs to their owners can be considerable but incorporating small changes to our existing horse care can make a real impact on the spread of disease.
The Horse Trust funds vital research and Strangles is certainly something that falls under that umbrella. We are proud to have been Strangles Awareness Week collaborators and to have supported the development of this animation about strangles transmission and prevention.
Being aware of the risk of strangles (and other diseases) and understanding that not all contagious horses look unwell is really important. All horse owners and the people working with horses can make a difference to the spread of disease. The animation highlights a few small but effective practices we can all incorporate.
Your support goes directly towards funding important research like this. Find out more about how you can support us here.
