Thank You to Cineworld

On Thursday 27th February, The National Theatre’s internationally acclaimed production of War Horse was broadcast live from London’s West End to cinemas around the world.

The Horse Trust would like to thank Cineworld Milton Keynes who kindly chose to fundraise for the charity during the evening and raised over £250! We’d also like to thank Cineworld Ipswich who organised a raffle on the night and raised £180 for The Horse Trust!

War Horses

The charity’s connection with War Horses began during The First World War when The Horse Trust provided the first ever motorised horse ambulance. The vehicle helped transport horses from the front line for treatment and proved so useful that 13 more were commissioned. By the end of the war, these 14 ambulances had helped to save many thousands of horse’s lives.

After the war, some horses were able to retire to The Horse Trust. Roger’s story bears many similarities to that of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. Found wandering rider less on the Somme, a British Officer took him in and rode him for the rest of the war. Roger helped him out of many scrapes and proved an excellent War Horse. After the war, in thanks to his horse, the Officer paid for Roger’s retirement at our Home of Rest for Horses where he lived out his days in peaceful countryside.

The Horse Trust has a long history of working alongside the army and today we are proud to offer retirement and respite care for many of our nations working horses. Commando retired from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in 2012. He is kindly sponsored by National Theatre’s War Horse who visited The Horse Trust in June last year.
