William’s Story
William, or The Duke of Dazzleton, retired to us in 2020, after a glittering career.
As with all horses from The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, William’s name (The Duke of Dazzleton), comes from the Robert Smith Surtees novel, ‘Mr Sponge’s Sporting Tour’.
William spent an impressive career as an Officer’s Charger. As he is black with no white markings, he was usually part of the Left Section Commanders horses (these are the types of horses that would be often used for State Funerals). William participated in numerous parades and often attracted a lot of attention due to his size and dashingly good looks!
This stunning lad was also used a lot in training and was said to be a firm favourite for the officer’s lessons as he always made them ‘look good’ with his big flashy movement! Rumour has it too, that when it came to competitions, William was always in high demand as he was an excellent show jumper.
Now, at The Horse Trust, our talented gentle giant is a favourite amongst staff and supporters alike.
