HIRING OUT HORSES
INSPECTOR TRAINING
An in-person course for those local authority officers inspecting premises hiring out horses
The Licensing of Activities Involving Animals Regulations require those carrying out inspections to be appropriately qualified. This course will offer specific training relating to the inspection of premises hiring out horses and is suitable as refresher training for qualified local authority officers as well as being a good introduction for those looking to undertake a qualification.
The course will consist of ½ day online virtual training followed by one day in person classroom and practical training delivered by experienced Animal Health Inspectors and industry experts.

Tutors will include:

Carolyn Madgwick – Director of Legislation and Training, The Horse Trust. Formerly, Senior Trading Standards Officer, Animal Health and Welfare, Hampshire County Council
Steven Gale – Investigator, World Horse Welfare. Formerly, Animal Health and Welfare Officer, Stockton on Tees Borough Council
Training will include
- An overview of the regulations in relation to Hiring out Horses
- Equine Identification
- Equine Transportation
- Tack and saddlery inspection
- Health and Safety – Fire safety; PPE standards
- Basic awareness of horse behaviour
- Donkeys – how they differ
- Vet v LA officer responsibilities
Practical sessions
- The veterinary inspection of the horse
- How to approach and work around horses
- Awareness of BCS and weigh taping – Colours and markings
- Inspection of grazing, fencing, forage, bedding etc

The course will be held online followed by an in-person training day.
