Domino’s Story
Domino is a piebald cob gelding standing at 13.3hh, and he has been a cherished member of our family here at The Horse Trust since November 2012. Arriving as a mere few-week-old foal, Domino came to us alongside his fellow ex-resident Jenga, who has since been successfully rehomed. Both horses had been cruelly abandoned before finding refuge with us, a heartbreaking chapter in their early lives. Domino’s story, like many of the animals rescued from neglect, is one of resilience, hope, and recovery, and he has truly blossomed into a treasured presence on the yard.
Domino’s rescue is part of a much larger story of survival. In January 2008, a shocking case of animal cruelty was uncovered at Spindles Farm in Amersham, which remains one of the most harrowing animal welfare cases in UK history. While the story of Spindles Farm remains a dark chapter in animal welfare history, Domino is one of the success stories. Thanks to the dedication of The Horse Trust staff, along with the overwhelming support of the public, the surviving horses, ponies, and donkeys were given a second chance at life. Domino is now living a safe, healthy, and happy life with us, and we are proud to witness the transformation he has undergone.
However, Domino’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In recent years, he has begun to lose his sight, a condition that has required the team to adapt his care and management. Despite this new obstacle, Domino has shown incredible strength and courage, as he adjusts to his changing world. His best friend and constant companion, Star, has taken on the role of his “seeing-eye” buddy. The bond between the two is heartwarming; whether in the yard or when being led, Star is always at Domino’s side, guiding him and offering comfort. This close friendship has been key in helping Domino maintain his confidence and navigate his environment despite his visual impairment.
Domino is truly a pleasure to have on the yard. His sweet, gentle nature has won the hearts of everyone who cares for him, and we are endlessly inspired by his resilience. Watching him thrive, despite the hardships he has faced, fills us with pride and joy. Domino is a living testament to the power of kindness, patience, and love, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far he has come. His journey from abandonment to a life filled with care and companionship is one we are privileged to be part of.
