Duke (left) served with the Epping Forest Services for many years after transferring from the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch. Duke was described as ‘the best of the Forest Patrol Horses’ and very impressive to ride as he was intelligent, responsive, powerful and fast. Duke patrolled Epping Forest with his rider Andrew Gummie and they had a very special bond and always looked out for each other. He loved his work, would never tire, and loved being the centre of attention! After his retirement from patrol services, Duke went to Writtle College and taught numerous students how to ride and care for horses. Beverly-Jayne Smith, ex Mounted Forest Keeper said ‘Duke deserves a long and happy retirement after serving his country and communities for so many years. It is a pleasure to have you retire to us Duke!
